چکیده

background patients with systemic lupus erythematous (sle) are more prone to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases due to atherosclerosis and consequently death. objectives the aim of this study was to explore a possible relationship between the intima media thickness (imt) of carotid arteries and the levels of c-reactive protein (crp) in sle patients. patients and methods: sixty sle patients and 60 healthy persons, being matched in age, ethnicity, gender and body mass index, were recruited for the study. the thickness of intima-media of the carotid arteries and the levels of crp were measured using color doppler ultrasonography and highly sensitive crp measurement methods, respectively then findings were compared between the two groups. results: ultrasonographic evaluation showed atherosclerosis in 6 (10%) and 3 persons (5%) of the patients and control groups, respectively (p = 0. 298). the mean thickness of intima-media was not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.31).but the mean level of crp was significantly higher in patients group (p = 0. 005). conclusions: we could not find any relationship between the serum crp level and the risk of atherosclerosis progression in patients with sle. perhaps, sle alone is not an independentrisk factor for atherosclerosis.

The relationship between carotid intima–media thickness and global atherosclerosis

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between (i) carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) at baseline as well as (ii) change in CIMT over 5 years (ΔCIMT) and atherosclerotically induced luminal narrowing in non-coronary arterial territories assessed by whole-body magnetic resonance angiography (WBMRA). METHODS AND RESULTS In subgroups of the Prospective Investigat...

Evaluation of the relationship between hepatic and cardiac iron overload with MRI T2* and carotid intima media thickness with Doppler ultrasound in beta thalassemia major patients

Background: Iron overload is caused early progression of atherosclerosis in beta thalassemia patients due to regular repeated blood transfusion. MRI T2* is a gold standard non-invasive method for detecting hepatic and cardiac iron overload. The aim of this study was the comparison of carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in the patients and healthy control groups with Doppler ultrasound for ear...

Relationship between High-Density Lipoprotein and C-reactive Protein in Patients with Atherosclerosis

Abstract Background and Objective: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease mostly caused by oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDLs) while High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) oppose atherosclerosis by inhibiting the oxidation of LDLs. Serum concentration of C- reactive protein (CRP) also increases as an acute phase protein in inflammatory conditions like atherosclerosis. We aimed to evalu...

Carotid intima-media thickness and plaque as surrogate biomarkers of atherosclerosis among consecutive women with systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the pathogenic pathways of premature accelerated atherosclerosis (AS) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the role of both traditional and non-traditional, SLE-specific risk factors is still under debate. AIM To assess surrogate biomarkers of subclinical AS in SLE and to evaluate potential relations wit...

Relationship between intima-media thickness in the common carotid artery and atherosclerosis in the carotid bifurcation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE An increase in intima-media thickness (IMT) in the common carotid artery (CCA) is commonly used as a marker of atherosclerosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between IMT in the CCA and atherosclerosis in the carotid bifurcation. METHODS 182 consecutive patients (mean age, 67 years) referred for carotid duplex scanning were included. We me...
